Chaminade plans $5 million science lab

This summer, Chaminade University will launch the first phase of construction on a $5.2 million project to renovate laboratories for the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Division.

A recent $600,000 grant from the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation brings money for the project to $1.1 million. Previous grants include $100,000 from First Hawaiian Foundation and $350,000 from an anonymous donor.

Construction will begin with a new annex of offices for faculty, a classroom and administrative area. When the annex is complete, faculty will move to the new offices and renovation of the labs will begin. A modular will be added behind Henry Hall, where the current science labs are located.


Kamehameha vice principal honored

The National Association of Secondary School Principals and McDonald's Corp. have named Stanley Nagatani, vice principal of Kamehameha Middle School, Hawai'i assistant principal of the year. He received a $1,000 check.

He was one of 52 vice principals nationwide honored at an awards banquet in February in San Diego.

Nagatani, who has been with Kamehameha Schools for nearly 20 years, will be recognized by fellow faculty and staff at an awards party at the McDonald's on North School Street at 4 p.m. tomorrow.


Writing contest entries available

Gamekids Hawai'i and Education Works are calling for entries for the O'ahu Young Authors Creative Writing Contest.

Prizes include scholarships to the Hawai'i Young Authors Camp on Maui in June and July. The grand prize is a laptop computer and airfare to the camp. Winning entries will be published online and in local newspapers.

The contest is open to students in grades 3 to 8, and includes short stories, poems, illustrated stories, drama scripts and multimedia on any subject. Material must have been written this year. Each child can submit a maximum of three entries.

There is no cost to enter, but a self-addressed, stamped envelope must be included if work is to be returned.

Application forms are available at Kumon Centers and Education Works, or at the Gamekids Web site, www.gamekids.com.

Submissions are due by May 1.


Speech festival planned Saturday

More than 370 students from Honolulu district schools will participate in the 15th Chevron Honolulu District Elementary Speech Festival on Saturday.

Students from more than 30 public elementary schools will demonstrate verbal communication skills, techniques and creativity at Kaimuki High School beginning at 8 a.m.


Noelani student's drawing featured

The April issue of Highlights for Children features a drawing by 8-year-old Alec Nakamura, a second-grader at Noelani Elementary.

"Fighting Dinosaurs" is featured in the magazine's science section.

The national monthly periodical for children ages 2-12 has a circulation of more than 2 million, including homes, schools, libraries and offices.
