Rocking, indie style

You want rock? Anna Bannanas will have lots of it tonight when the popular alternative venue plays host to an indie rock show. Local bands Haunted Pines, above, Little Moments and Walks Among Us will move the crowd with their fresh indie sounds. Chris James and Doug Fresh will be on hand with solid solo acoustic performances.

Doors open at 9 p.m. Cover is $5; for 21 and older. 946-5190.

A collage of many cultures

Cultures will converge as Hawai'i Pacific University presents Intercultural Day 2003, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday.

Fort Street Mall will host educational exhibits about the various countries represented at HPU, starting at 10 a.m. and continuing throughout the day. A parade at 10:30 a.m. will weave through downtown Honolulu and showcase students in traditional costume.

Entertainment is scheduled from 1-4 p.m. Besides the HPU International Chorale, there will be performances representing places such as the Philippines, Mexico, South Korea, Cyprus, French Polynesia, Japan, Africa, Brazil, Greece and India.

Pops with an island flavor

The Honolulu Symphony Orchestra Pops series returns this weekend with local favorites lighting up the stage. Multiple Na Hoku Hanohano award winner Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom will enchant the crowd with her singing; Barry Flanagan, co-founder of the group Hapa, will showcase his nimble slack-key style. Also joining the lineup will be the newly formed Hapa and "American Idol" contestant Jordan Segundo.

Shows are 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Tickets are $15, $27, $32, $42 and $57. 792-2000.


A Glittery 'Booty-licious'

Get down N dirty when Glitter N Glamour returns this month to the Wave Waikiki's Pussycat Lounge for "Booty-licious." Wiggle and jiggle to the sounds of KSM, E-Jay, D mofo D, Daniel J and tag team Rayne and Rundown. Head upstairs for the hip-hop moves and grooves of Gdog, Jrama, Subzero and LisaV.

House of Chandelier, Kakimochi Funk Crew and the Glitter N Glamour dancers will help shake things up. And if that's not enough for you, there'll be free glitter makeovers, massages and an art expo.

A watery race to the finish

Cowabunga! Cheer on your favorite young paddlers at Saturday's 7th annual Meadow Gold Milk Carton Regatta, a moo-velous event with 32 student teams from middle and high schools around O'ahu racing two-person boats made from Meadow Gold and Viva half-gallon milk cartons, wood and tape. Pictured above is a team from St. Andrew's Priory middle school in last year's regatta.

There will be two divisions, with the winners from each winning a $1,000 CompUSA gift certificate. Teachers will race their students' boats for a chance to win a Meadow Gold ice cream party for the class.

Fair weather at Hanahau'oli

Build friendships and have a bunch of fun at Hanahau'oli School's annual Children's Fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. With the theme of "Tool Time" in honor of the construction of the new junior kindergarten building, there will be keiki craft projects, construction-themed games and food galore. Highlights include a country store, bake sale and the latest sports craze, speed stacking. Check out 'Ohi'a Productions' "Peril in Paradise" at 2 p.m., or race model cars in Rich Robertson's "Pit of Doom" track. Get creative at the "American Idol Builders" mock salon and day spa or build upon your knowledge with the Honolulu Zoo Society's educational activities.

A celebration of Kailua

Show your feelings for Kailua by heading for the 11th annual "I Love Kailua" town party, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, for what may be the last shindig of its kind (this is the last year the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle will serve as host).

Check out downtown Kailua behind First Hawaiian Bank and enjoy entertainment by Uncle Harry, Coconut Joe, Puamana, Elua Kane and Aloha Pu'u Wailani Halau. The famed "Taste of Kailua" is back, with samples from popular area restaurants. Grab "I Love Kailua" logo items such as T-shirts, mugs, totes and bumper stickers while they last. To add to the fun, there will be children's entertainment, arts and crafts and free health screenings by Castle Medical Center. Michael W. Perry and Kit Beuret are emcees.

No bones about it

It's a dog's life at the Windward Hawaiian Dog Fanciers' Association All Breed Dog Show. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, King Intermediate School in Kane'ohe will host about 500 canines, representing 80 breeds and varieties, who put on their best to compete for top honors. And don't forget to check out the booths featuring items to pamper those pooches.

A feast of East and West

East meets West during the East-West Fest from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday at the East-West Center. Entertainment includes Kenny Endo's taiko drumming, Tahitian dancing, Indian dancing, a Japanese tea ceremony demonstration and an international fashion show. Games, activities and, of course, food will be available. Meal coupons are $5 in advance, $6 at the door. Admission is free. 944-7111.


On Wings of Valor

Heroic Pearl Harbor fighter pilot Philip Rasmussen will be at the USS Arizona Memorial starting Tuesday to meet the public and launch a scale replica of the plane he flew in the war.

Rasmussen, one of four pilots able to get airborne during the attack on Dec. 7, 1941, is credited with downing a Japanese bomber and landing safely despite 544 bullet holes in his plane. He was awarded the Silver Star for his bravery.

Rasmussen will be at the memorial Tuesday, Wednesday, and April 18-21 as part of the official launch of the Wings of Valor series of authentically reproduced fighter planes. He will autograph models of Curtiss P-36A fighter planes from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the bookstore. At 9 and 11 a.m., he will hold interpretive presentations on the back lanai of the visitor center.
