More vintage surf stuff set for auction

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The first Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction last year generated sales of more than $220,000 with more than 200 lots going under the hammer.

Surf memorabilia and collectibles ranged from redwood boards to a 1930s bathing suit from the Moana Hotel. A 1930s balsa board went for $18,200.

So, naturally, QuicksilverEdition and surf promoter Randy Rarick, above, are gonna do it again: July 19 at the Blaisdell Center in conjunction with the Hawaii All Collectors' Show. They're now calling for items to be consigned for sale. Owners of the auction items will receive 90 percent of the money raised, with 10 percent benefiting junior lifeguard programs. Information: Hawaii Surf Promotions, 638-7266 or surfpro@hawaii.rr.com. To preview items, see www.hawaiiansurfauction.com.

Museum exhibition goes to the dogs

In an unusually themed show, 15 local artists have produced work in a wide range of media on the subject of "man's best friend." The doggie works range from the whimsical to the profound. It's a pre-event exhibition tied to The Contemporary Museum's Contempo 2003 fund-raiser, and the museum will benefit from sale of the items.

The works will be displayed on the first floor at Neiman Marcus today through April 25. Those who want to "adopt" one of the dogs can put in bid. Opening bids range from $75 to $300. Registration forms for bidding can be found online at: www.tcmhi.org. Absentee bids must be received before 5 p.m. on April 25.

Book tells you how to be model perfect

So you want to be a model, but you don't have an agent (yet) and you have some questions. Do I have to be tall? Thin? Have perfect skin? What do I need in my portfolio? How do I start? William Squire, a model, agent and modeling coach in Hollywood (and part-time Hawai'i resident), and Laura Boulay, a model and actress, put together the comprehensive "Model's Workbook: a Hollywood Agent's Twenty-Step Guide to Launching Your Modeling Career," with the goal of dispelling myths about modeling. Not available yet in book stores, it can be found on the Web at www.modelsworkbook.com or by phoning (800) 247-6553.
