KCC program recognized

A novel educational pursuit at Kapi'olani Community College, the International Cafe, was recognized by the American Council for International and Intercultural Education by the awarding of its 2003 International intercultural Achievement Award (Best Practice). The KCC program offers tutoring, craft-making, off-campus service activities and other activities enhancing intercultural exchange — often accepted by teachers for in-class credit, or in place of writing term papers or taking exams.



Social workers honored

Four local social workers were honored recently by the National Association of Social Workers for outstanding contributions to their field: Social Worker of the Year 2003, Frank Chong; Social Worker of the Year in Family and Child Welfare, Don Bebee; Social Worker of the Year in Mental Health and Substance Abuse, Greg Tanida; and Social Worker of the Year in Professional Education and Training, Mary Sheridan.



UH students win awards

The American Institute of Architecture Students Award was presented for the third time in 10 years to a University of Hawai'i architecture student. The award was one of three presented recently to UH students.

• Matthew moneyhon, a dual major in Asian studies and law, was awarded the 2003 Chung-fong and Grace Ning Excellence in Chinese Studies Award, and cash prize of $500.

• Ka Wong, in the UH Department of Art, received the 2003 John DeFrancis Prize, awarded for the best paper and presentation at the School of Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies' annual graduate student conference. Wong's paper, "From Paris to Tokyo: Chinese Artists' Quest for Modernity through Western-style Painting in the Early 20th Century," examines the tensions between modernity and "Chinese-ness" in the context of 20th century Chinese art.

• Dean Johnston, a UH-Manoa School of Architecture graduate student, won the 2002 AIAS research award for his project on the use of bamboo in architecture.



LCC magazine takes 1st place

Leeward Community College's Harvest magazine has garnered a first-place showing in the American Scholastic Press Association's annual Review and Contest Awards for scholastic yearbooks, magazines and other publications. The publication's fall 2001 issue placed in the category of community colleges with enrollments of more than 2,501.
