Q & A
Q. Sometimes people refer to Saddam Hussein as Saddam. Isn't Hussein his last name?
A. Saddam's full name is Saddam Hussein al-Majd al-Tikriti, but he uses neither al-Majd nor al-Tikriti. Hussein is not a last name, but his father's first name. In the Middle East, he is not usually referred to as President Hussein; the usual practice is to use two names President Saddam Hussein or simply use Saddam.
