Radford works double OT to stay unbeaten

By Kyle Sakamoto

At the start of the fourth quarter against Campbell last night, Radford coach David Lane decided to stick with his starting lineup to the very end.

The end came later than expected as the host Rams went to double overtime to beat the Sabers, 46-40, and remain undefeated in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division.

Radford's starting five of Joanne Czumalowski, Jenna Johnson-Endo, Tereva Moore, Lia Mickey and Talaya Jones combined to score 44 points.

"I don't think I subbed in the fourth quarter and the overtimes," Lane said. "It's a credit to those girls sucking it up.

"I'm proud of that five because we only start one senior, one freshman and three juniors, so we're a young team."

Campbell led 18-9 at halftime, but Radford (7-0) scored 10 consecutive points during the opening four minutes of the third quarter to take its first lead at 19-18. Mickey, who scored 16 points, hit two of her four 3-pointers during the rally.

"Lia Mickey is a third-year varsity player," Lane said. "She's an outstanding shooter. She had a slump for a couple of games, but we worked on her confidence and she's been stroking it. She's a gamer and she showed up tonight."

Campbell (4-2) was 2 of 10 from the field and committed five turnovers in the third.

"We didn't apply enough pressure (in the first half)," Lane said. "We respected their ball handling too much. In the second half we said we have to play our defense, which is press, and that's what we did."

There were five lead changes and two ties in the second half.

Campbell's Jamie Kua, who scored 16 points, sent the game into overtime tied at 33 by banking in a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1 second remaining.

"We had three options, maybe four; she would have been the fifth," Campbell coach Nathan Macadangdang said. "They left her wide open and thank God it worked."

The Sabers scored the first four points of the first four-minute overtime on a three-point play by Jalen Garcia and a free throw by Kua with 2:30 remaining.

Moore made two baskets, the second tying the game at 37 with 47 seconds left.

Campbell held the ball for the remainder of the first overtime period, but couldn't get a shot off against a man-to-man defense.

"We went kind of stagnant," Macadangdang said.

Radford finished off the second overtime with a 7-0 run. Mickey's 3-pointer from the right wing with 1:45 left put the Rams ahead for good, 42-40. Czumalowski hit 4 of 6 free throws over the final 40 seconds.
