Pearl City outlasts 'Aiea, 38-27

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Patience was a virtue for the Pearl City High School girls basketball team last night, as the visiting Chargers wore down 'Aiea 38-27 in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division showdown.

The victory kept Pearl City unbeaten at 6-0, a half-game behind first-place Radford (7-0). The Rams survived Campbell, 46-40, in double-overtime last night.

The Chargers did not have the same type of struggle against Na Ali'i, but it did take Pearl City more than two periods to break away into a comfortable lead. A 10-3 run to start the second half finally gave the Chargers some breathing room late in the third quarter, when they led 20-11.

"We have problems with the zone (defenses)," said Pearl City center Marci Lobendahn, who was shut out in the first half but had seven points in the decisive third period. "At halftime, our coach (Mike Morton) told us we need to move our legs faster. So that's what I did, I started to move my feet and roll off of the girls."

Lobendahn's three-point play gave the Chargers a 20-11 advantage with 1:41 remaining in the third quarter, and her putback with 40 seconds left allowed Pearl City to take a 23-13 lead heading into the final period.

Lobandahn finished with nine points.

In the fourth quarter, the Chargers' lead was safe with point guard Christie Ayers at the controls. Ayers, one of the state's top dribblers, finished with 16 points including 10 free throws in 12 attempts.

Pearl City was 16 of 22 from the line overall.

"Christie is a really good player, she hurt us down the stretch," 'Aiea coach Bob Tabije said. "We tried to play solid 'D,' but then we got into foul trouble, and with our numbers ... we have two players injured and one on a trip."

Morton said he emphasized strong defense, and asked his players to stay patient on offense.

"I feel confident because we work hard, especially on defense," Morton said. "Most teams will have trouble with our defense, so I told them to just keep working on defense and the offense is going to come. (Na Ali'i) only had eight players, so I knew eventually they would get tired and there would be openings in the zone."

Ayers also had four rebounds and three steals. Jamie Rosario led 'Aiea with 12 points.
