HPU splits doubleheader with Grand Canyon

Scott Hunter hit a two-run home run in the first inning to lead Hawai'i Pacific to a 7-1 win over Grand Canyon (Ariz.) and a split of a doubleheader yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

Grand Canyon won the first game, 7-5, getting home runs from Joey Reiman, Chris Raymond and Chris Rock.

Hawai'i Pacific is 21-13, Grand Canyon 25-19.

In the second game, Matt Paulsen allowed one run on five hits, struck out six and walked two for the Sea Warriors. Geoffrey Say scored two runs for HPU.

In the first game, Grand Canyon scored two runs in the top of the sixth to break a 5-all tie. The Sea Warriors got all of their runs in the second inning.

Tyler Ward was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs for HPU.

WATER POLO

UH crushes Santa Clara: Beth Novick scored three goals and Audrey Harrer two to lead Hawai'i to a 13-5 women's water polo victory over host Santa Clara (Calif.) in a non-conference match yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine are 9-11. Santa Clara is 14-16.

Santa Clara led 3-2 after the first quarter before Hawai'i took control with five second-quarter goals for a 7-4 lead.

UH goalie Amber Lumb had a season-high 11 saves.

FITNESS

Duke event set: More than 400 Hawai'i Boys & Girls Club members — including about 60 from the military Boys & Girls Club — will participate in the second annual Duke Sports and Fitness Day today from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ko Olina Resort & Marina's lagoon No. 2.

Stations will be set up for students, aged 7 to 17, to provide instructions in sports, such as paddling, surfing and fishing.

The sports and fitness day supports the goals of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation and the Boys and Girls Clubs to encourage sports and fitness excellence.

BASKETBALL

2 added to Maui Invitational: Central Michigan and Santa Clara have been added to the Maui Invitational, Nov. 24-26, in Lahaina Civic Center.

They replace Florida State and California in a field that includes Hawai'i, host Chaminade, Dayton, Ohio State, San Diego State and Villanova.

Central Michigan knocked off sixth-seeded Creighton in the West Regional of this year's NCAA Tournament before losing to Duke in the second round.

Future Maui fields joining Chaminade include, in 2004: BYU, Iowa, Louisville, North Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee and Texas; and in 2005: Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, DePaul, Kansas, Maryland and Michigan State.
