Maui search for bodies continues
The search continued yesterday for the bodies of a Louisville, Ky. schoolteacher and his 8-year-old daughter who were swept over 184-foot Makahiku Falls in Maui's Haleakala National Park Thursday afternoon.
Park ranger Sharon Ringsven said water at 'Ohe'o Stream was too dangerous for divers yesterday. Searchers on foot and in helicopters were unable to find the remains of Kevin Brown, 39, and his daughter, Elizabeth.
"The stream has varied between being at flood stage and an average day," said Ringsven. "It decreased in the afternoon and returned to flood stage after heavy rains."
Ringsven said if the rain continued overnight, it's doubtful that divers will be able to return to the water today. She said the land and air search would continue between Makahiku Falls and the ocean.
Police warn of phone scam
Some Kaua'i residents have received phone calls from people seeking credit-card information in return for details on a gift from Kmart or Wal-Mart stores.
Police said the calls are not legitimate, and they urged residents not to provide any credit-card information over the phone. In most cases, the callers have said they have most of the credit-card information but require the three-digit security code or card verification value number from the back of the card.

Two men killed in 'Aiea car crash
Two men were killed early yesterday in 'Aiea when their 2001 Honda Civic went out of control on Kamehameha Highway near Honomanu Street and slammed into two traffic signal poles.
Police said the westbound car sheered off the first pole and stopped after it hit the second pole. Both men died at the scene. Neither the driver, in his 20s, nor the passenger, 21, were wearing seat belts.
Speed and alcohol appeared to be factors, police said.

The Ala Moana Satellite City Hall will be closed Friday and Saturday to allow workers to replace the carpeting in the lobby with tile. The facility will reopen the following Monday.
The carpet is being removed because it has become tattered and poses a safety hazard, according to the city.
