Kahuku boys, Farrington girls win track titles

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Kahuku boys track team took care of business early yesterday when the sun was still shining brightly on Kaiser High's field.

Chris Assily, of Kaiser, edges Frank Bracewell, of Kahuku, to win the boys 100-meter dash at the OIA East Track and Field Championships.

The Farrington girls team had to wait until the final event to win its title, long after darkness had won its daily battle with daylight.

Although the drama levels involved in winning their respective titles were vastly different, both celebrated O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division championships.

The Governor girls went into the final event — the 4x400-meter relay — trailing Kahuku by two points.

The Farrington team of Summer Stone, Euvelyn Calma, Crystal Josefovicz and Jannelyn Lat finished second in 4:41.1 for eight points.

Kahuku finished fourth in 4:53.0 for four points.

For relays, points were awarded on a 10-8-6-4-2 basis. On individual events the distribution was 6-4-3-2-1.

The final tally was Farrington 56, Kahuku 54. Kaiser finished third with 49 points, and Kalani and Kalaheo tied for fourth with 32.

Teams didn't know the team scores until they were announced after the meet. When it was announced Farrington had won the girls division, the Governors, who huddled in a small circle on the infield, yelled and jumped in celebration.

"I'm so proud of all of them," Farrington sprint coach Darren Weaver said. "All of the varsity girls they all placed, they all did very well.

"It was close and then later on because Euvelyn didn't place first in the 100 and the 200, then I kind of thought they didn't have a chance, so I was very surprised after."

Calma won the 300 hurdles in 50.1 seconds and the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 9 inches.

"We were really surprised (to win) because Kaiser had a lot of girls and Kahuku has pretty good girls, too," said Calma, a senior.

Teammate Rosela Fa'aiu won the discus (114-2) and shot put (36-1).

The Governors also had four second-place finishes and one third.

"I'm glad I came in first place and happy that other people came in their places as well," said Fa'aiu, a junior.

The Kahuku boys scored 70 points to make a winner out of first-year coach Sean Makaiau.

"This team, I'm proud of them because everything I asked them to do, whether they know how to do it or not, they're willing to do it," said Makaiau, who added he had never coached track before. "They're unselfish and that's what makes our team so successful."

Roosevelt (53) placed second, followed by McKinley (37), Moanalua (33) and Farrington (24).

The Red Raiders' Jerrod Avegalio won the discus with a throw of 186-10 and the shot put with a distance of 52-10. Frank Bracewell won the 200 in 23.1.

Kahuku's Krisha Kai, center, runs to victory in the girls 100-meter dash. Kai won three events at the OIA East meet.

Makaiau, a veteran defensive backs coach on the Red Raiders football team, said 36 football players competed on the track team.

Kahuku also had nine second-place finishes and two third-places.

Kahuku's Krisha Kai and McKinley's Sheena Thain were the only athletes to win three individual events.

Kai won the 100 hurdles (15.9), 100 (12.6) and high jump (5-3).

Thain won the 1,500 (5:14.7), 800 (2:35.6) and 3,000 (11:52.0).

At the Western Division meet at Mililani yesterday, Radford won the boys' title with 82 points and the Mililani girls won with 101.

Mililani's Mei Li Nickles won four individual events: the triple jump (32-11), long jump (17-0), high jump (5-0) and 100 hurdles (15.9), and she also was part of the winning 4x100 relay team.
