BYUH men, women win PacWest tennis titles

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's and women's tennis teams swept the Pacific West Conference finals yesterday in Billings, Mont.

The BYUH men beat defending PacWest champion Hawai'i Pacific, 5-1. The defending champion BYUH women defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 7-0. The BYUH men and women are the defending Division II national champions.

In the men's final yesterday, most of the individual matches were hotly contested. BYUH's top-ranked singles player Jan Krejci defeated HPU's Mike Maatta in three sets, while BYUH's No. 3 doubles team of Wen-Lung Chang and Leon So'onalole needed a third-set tiebreak to beat HPU's Jan Tribler and Stefan Pampulov.

The Seasiders' Daouda Ndiaye also needed three sets to win his No. 5 singles match over Tribler. Hawai'i Pacific's Blaz Jurjec picked up the Sea Warriors' only win of the day, defeating Hong-Tae Kim in three sets.

The second-ranked Seasiders improved to 25-1 for the year and will likely host the regional tournament May 2-3.

In the third-place match, Hawai'i-Hilo dispatched Western New Mexico, 5-0. MSU-Billings finished fifth with a 5-1 win over Chaminade.

In the women's final, the top-ranked Lady Seasiders cruised past the Sea Warriors and stretched their consecutive-match winning streak to 60.

The only challenge in the match came in No. 3 doubles where HPU's Davelin Godinet and Bianca Barreto forced BYUH's Trisha Piercy and Guri Korinihona into a tiebreaker before Piercy and Korinihona finaly prevailed 9-7.

Judy Weng, Anna Anikanova, Amy Sun and Adrienn Hegedus, the nation's top-ranked women's player, all won their singles matches in straight sets.

In the third-place match, Hawai'i-Hilo easily handled Chaminade 5-0. Montana State-Billings placed fifth with a 5-0 win over Western New Mexico.



BASEBALL

• HPU splits doubleheader: Grandon Costa went 3-for-4, including a double and two RBIs, to lead Hawai'i Pacific to a 7-6 victory over Grand Canyon last night and a split of a doubleheader at Hans L' Orange Park.

Grand Canyon beat Hawai'i Pacific 17-6 in the first game, behind Chris Rock, who hit two home runs, and Joey Reiman, who added another.

Hawai'i Pacific is 22-14, Grand Canyon 26-20.

In the second game, David Zamarano pitched six innings to improve to 6-1.



WATER POLO

• UH tops San Jose State: Kristy Bagnall scored two goals, including one in the fourth period, to lift

No. 7 Hawai'i to a 6-5 victory over No. 9 San Jose State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match yesterday at San Jose, Calif.

Hawai'i is 10-11 overall, and 4-5 in the MPSF. San Jose State is 15-13 and 3-6.

The Rainbow Wahine scored three goals in the second period — two by Beth Novick — to take a 4-3 lead at halftime. UH's Malia Tarayao scored for UH in the third period for a 5-3 lead. The Spartans rallied with two goals in the fourth period to close to 6-5, but turned the ball over with 10 seconds remaining.

UH closes its MPSF regular season today at Stanford.



SOFTBALL

• BYUH-HPU canceled: The women's softball doubleheader between Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Hawai'i Pacific was canceled yesterday due to wet field conditions in La'ie caused by heavy overnight rains.

The Pacific West Conference doubleheader will not be rescheduled. The Seasiders finished 20-24 and 8-10 in the conference.

Hawai'i Pacific (23-19, 6-8) will play the La Verne (Calif.) on Tuesday at HPU Windward Field.
