North Kona man arrested in death

Big Island police today arrested a 28-year-old North Kona man in connection with the homicide investigation into the death of Michael Rhett Hackmeyer of Kailua-Kona.

Hackmeyer's partially decomposed body was discovered Thursday on Makalawena Beach Road.

Police did not say what led them to the suspect, who was arrested at his Kona Highlands residence at 6:30 a.m. today.

Hackmeyer died of head injuries and police reclassified the case to a homicide based on autopsy findings. The victim was found without identification and had to be identified by fingerprints, police said.


Two killed in car crash identified

The medical examiner's office today identified the two 21-year-old Navy men killed Saturday in a 1:25 a.m. car crash on Kamehameha Highway as Keith Aguilar of Pearl City and Sean McNamara of the USS Port Royal.

Police said the men were in a westbound 2001 Honda Civic failed to make a bend in the roadway and sheered off one traffic signal pole before striking a second signal pole. Speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors, police said.

Through Saturday, 27 people have been killed on O'ahu roadways this year.


Suspect held in Pearl City stabbing

A 39-year-old man was charged by police yesterday with second-degree assault in connection with the stabbing of another man at 12:15 a.m. Saturday on 'Akeukeu Street in Pearl City. The 21-year-old victim was stabbed three times.

Michael Savoy, 39, is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail.

Police did not have information on the stabbing victim's condition other than it is not critical.

The two men were drawn into an argument between two women over the keys to a vehicle. Savoy allegedly also reached through a partially open window of the vehicle in an attempt to stab the woman, 21, who was arguing with his girlfriend.


Arson blamed in school blaze

A fire that firefighters say was deliberately set caused an estimated $40,000 damage to a portable storage shed at Roosevelt High School yesterday.

Firefighters responded to an anonymous tip and found the shed on fire at 3 a.m. Graffiti was also found on walls of several buildings, police said.
