Man arrested after chase

A man attempting to elude police yesterday in a chase from Dillingham Air Field to Ka'ena Point ran out of road on Farrington Highway, jumped into the ocean and tried to swim away.

Fearing for the man's safety, police, who had been following him because he was speeding, called the Fire Department.

Firefighters launched a helicopter and spotted the man, said HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada, but he waved off their attempts to assist him.

The 37-year-old man eventually swam back in and turned himself over to police.

Wahiawa police arrested him on three outstanding warrants.

Maui search again fruitless

Weather allowed divers to go into 'Ohe'o Stream yesterday on Maui, but there was no sign of the bodies of a schoolteacher from Louis-ville, Ky., and his 8-year-old daughter who were swept over 184-foot Makahiku Falls in Haleakala National Park on Thursday.

Maui Fire Department officials said searchers on foot and in helicopters also helped look for the remains of Kevin Brown, 39, and his daughter, Elizabeth.

It was not known if divers would go into the stream again today.

High winds close Kahului center

The Kahului Community Center was closed yesterday afternoon after high winds knocked down a light pole that hit two spectators watching a soccer match, Maui County officials said.

Two females suffered abrasions, but there were no major injuries.

Glenn Correa, Maui County parks director, said winds were blowing about 30 to 35 mph at the center.

The community center was to remain closed today.
