THE LEFT LANE
Curating the couture

Advertiser Staff and News Services

An 1890s white holoku, a polyester uchikake (Japanese dress) with brocade obi, an embroidered silk Chinese wedding ensemble and a miniature replica of Princess Diana's wedding dress ... these may sound like a cultural hodgepodge, but it all comes together in an exhibit by Carol D'Angelo's UH-Manoa costume museum management class.

Visuals for the exhibit are large pastel drawings by D'Angelo's advanced fashion sketching class. The free exhibit runs 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. weekdays through April 25 in the Miller Hall gallery, Room 112.

Rock-star school

Does your kid want to be a Blues Traveler or an All Star? He or she can learn to rock this summer at Rock Works Music School. The school offers music and vocal classes for kids who have never picked up an instrument as well as those already in bands who want to learn how to pursue gigs.

Instruments (guitars — yes!) are provided. Rock Works owner/musical director Brian Albus said the likely first-set list of material to be taught (before students get to bring in stuff they really groove to, that is) will include hits by Blues Traveler, the Eagles, Smash Mouth and the Monkees. (Worry not kids: There's no Journey ... yet.)

An eight-week beginner's course starts June 11 at $295 per student, and an Aug. 9 student showcase ends the summer. Call 234-5335 by May 31.

White 'Elephant'

The White Stripes' CD "Elephant" entered the national charts at No. 6 last week, an impressive showing for the raw-edged Detroit duo, which is at the forefront of a new wave of passionate rock 'n' roll bands that includes the Strokes, the Vines and the Hives.

The real test: sales. If this one tops 1 million, the bandwagon may be rolling.
