'Tastes' benefit set for April 25

The Soroptimist International of Waikiki will hold a Tastes of the Arts of Kapi'olani Community College event April 25 to benefit the Waikiki Community Center, Stop the Violence campaigns and the KCC Culinary Arts Department Scholarship Fund.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. and include food stations presented by Chef Grant Sato matched with wines of the states of Washington, Oregon and California.

Entertainment will include Coconut Joe and Kaikolu.

Tickets are $100, of which half is tax deductible.

Seats vacant on advisory council

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve Advisory Council is seeking applicants for vacant seats on its Reserve Advisory Council for three-year terms.

Applications may be obtained by writing to Moani Pai, 6700 Kalaniana'ole Highway, Suite 215, Honolulu, HI 96825, calling 397-2661 or online at hawaiireef.noaa.gov.

Completed applications must be postmarked no later than May 1.

Dole maze event scheduled

The Dole Plantation Pineapple Garden Maze will celebrate its fifth anniversary from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Dole Plantation, 64-1550 Kamehameha Highway.

The free event will feature live music and performers, keiki activities and crafts, a country market and various food booths.

School principals and area politicians will compete in the "Maze Challenge," a relay-style race through the world's largest maze, according to the 2001 Guinness Book of World Records.

Slide show, talk slated for Maui

MA'ALAEA, Maui — Author Ann Fielding and photographer Ed Robinson will present a slide show from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow as part of the Pacific Whale Foundation's Great Maui Whale Festival.

A free talk and book signing will take place at the Natural Selections Coffee Co. at The Harbor Shops at Ma'alaea.

Fielding has written three best-selling books about Hawai'i's marine environment. She was the Waikiki Aquarium's first director of public education and conducted research in crustacean taxonomy at the Bishop Museum. She moved to Maui in 1979 to head the science department at Seabury Hall. Fielding also runs Island Explorations, a travel company that provides marine-life study tours.

Robinson is owner of Ed Robinson's Diving Adventures, and Hawaiian Watercolors, an underwater photography company. His work has been published by the National Geographic Society and numerous other publications.
