Pitt reportedly set to hire ex-UH assistant Dixon

Jamie Dixon, a former University of Hawai'i men's basketball assistant, is expected to be named head coach at Pittsburgh today, according to two reports.

ESPN.com and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said Dixon's promotion from Pitt associate head coach will be announced at a news conference. Dixon, 37, would succeed Ben Howland, who accepted the UCLA position a week ago.

This would be Dixon's first head coaching job. He spent 12 years as a Division I assistant, nine under Howland at Northern Arizona and Pitt, and three under Riley Wallace at Hawai'i (1992-94 and 1998-99).

Dixon, a standout guard at Texas Christian, first joined the UH staff in 1992 as a strategist and helped guide the Rainbows to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1994.

He left UH after that season to join Howland at Northern Arizona. Dixon returned to UH in 1998, replacing Jeff Law, who took over the UH-Hilo program.
