Water main breaks in Kalihi
A broken 12-inch water main on 'Elua and Kalihi streets in Kalihi Valley reported shortly before 1 p.m. yesterday disrupted service to at least 15 residents and caused repair crews to close the two lanes nearest the median strip on Kalihi Street, between 'Elua and 'Akahi.
The two outermost lanes remained open. Repair work was expected to last "well into the night," said Tracy Burgo, an information specialist with the Board of Water Supply.
Meanwhile, repairs were completed by midday yesterday on a broken 24-inch water main near Ko Olina Resort that backed up Honolulu-bound traffic along Farrington Highway during rush hour.

Minor mercury spill at Kalaeloa
A state Department of Health response team was called in to contain a minor mercury spill at the Hawai'i National Guard Youth Challenge Academy on Monday afternoon at Kalaeloa (formerly Barbers Point Naval Air Station), according to a Hawai'i Department of Defense press release.
"A 16-year-old corps member admitted to taking a vial containing mercury from a nonfunctioning thermostat in a dorm room, then breaking open the switch in the restroom of the classroom building," the release said.
A sweep of the restroom showed trace amounts of mercury, the department reported. No other mercury was found. Remaining thermostat switches with mercury were removed from the academy after the incident.
The academy is a residential academic and fitness program for high school students at risk of dropping out.

Off-duty officer arrests man
Police said they arrested a 38-year-old man yesterday after he pointed a loaded pistol at an off-duty officer.
The man faces charges of terroristic threatening and firearm violations.
Police said the situation started when a man was driving on H-1 Freeway in East Honolulu and a car began to tailgate him. The 26-year-old man called his brother, an off-duty officer, and told him what was going on.
The officer told his brother to drive to an area near Date and Pa'ani streets. Police said the officer's brother drove there and was followed by the other man.
The officer said when he walked up to the suspect's car, the man pointed a pistol at him. The officer identified himself as a police officer and the man was arrested without incident.
