Duffy a smart choice for our Supreme Court

Out of a field of talented and impressive names, Gov. Linda Lingle has nominated Honolulu attorney James Duffy to the Hawai'i Supreme Court.

It is an inspired choice.

Duffy has great respect and credibility within the bar in Hawai'i. If he is confirmed, as he should be, he will quickly become a solid voice of reason and legal responsibility on the high court.

Lingle has made it clear she is looking for a Supreme Court that is less activist and more — for want of a better word — strict constructionist. Duffy's work in private practice shows a strong social conscience and a desire to see matters made right. That might tilt him toward the activist side.

But he is equally known as a conciliator — a lawyer who would rather see a just settlement over simply winning a victory. That suggests Duffy will move carefully before ruling in ways that extend the law.

His nomination should be swiftly approved by the state Senate.
