Pearl City remains perfect in OIA West

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Pearl City High School girls basketball team knocked off its third unbeaten opponent in a row and took control of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division race last night with a 46-16 rout of visiting Radford.

The Chargers improved to 7-0, and dropped Radford to 7-1.

Last week, Pearl City defeated Campbell (5-2) and 'Aiea (6-1). The Chargers have three games remaining — against Mililani (5-2), Wai'anae (1-6) and Waipahu (2-5) — and even if they lose one of those games, they still will clinch the West's No. 1 seed in the OIA playoffs because they own the head-to-head tiebreaker advantage over Radford and 'Aiea.

"I told the girls that this was a big one," Pearl City coach Mike Morton said. "It's important to get the No. 1 seed, especially because the East is so strong and that would mean we'd get the No. 4 (East) seed at home."

If there was any doubt about the Chargers being the team to beat in the West, it was answered quickly and clearly last night. Pearl City jumped to a 10-2 lead after one period and never led by fewer than six points the rest of the way.

Point guard Christie Ayers and center Marci Lobendahn, the Chargers' leading scorers at 14.6 and 10.3 points per game, respectively, combined for only 10 points.

Instead, the hot hands belonged to wing Amy Fujihara and reserve guard Kamill Reigo de Dios, who each sank three 3-point shots and combined for 20 points.

Fujihara swished two 3s in the first half and had eight points by intermission, and Reigo de Dios drained two 3-pointers in the third period and finished with nine points.

"I was hitting, so at halftime Kamill told me she was going to match me," Fujihara said. "We just spotted up and waited for the ball to kick back out to us."

Radford coach David Lane said he knew Fujihara and Reigo de Dios were threats to score, but his team set its sights on stopping Ayers and Lobendahn first.

"(The Chargers) had been slumping from the outside the last couple games, that's what we got from our scouting report," Lane said. "So we were keying on those two (Ayers and Lobendahn). But they shot the ball well tonight."
