English chosen UH's most outstanding

Carl English, who completed a record-breaking season for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team, received the Art Woolaway Most Outstanding Player Award last night.

English and the Rainbow Warriors, who finished 19-12 and advanced to the second round of the National Invitation Tournament, were honored during the team's awards banquet at the Hawai'i Prince Hotel.

English, who is hoping to play in the NBA next season, averaged a team-high 19.6 points per game as a junior. He established a school record with 89 3-pointers, and ranks seventh on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,259 points.

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard has declared for early entry into the NBA Draft.

English also won the Community Service Award.

Repeat winners from last season were Mark Campbell (Top Playmaker), Phil Martin (Top Defensive Player) and Haim Shimonovich (Top Rebounder).
