Kahuku, Moanalua win on road to set up tomorrow's showdown

KAILUA — The cream of O'ahu Interscholastic Association East girls basketball will stir it up tomorrow night at Moanalua High.

Moanalua and Kahuku set the table for their hoops feast last night with decisive triumphs on the road that brought each team's record to 7-0 with three games to go. Moanalua tarnished Castle's Knights, 62-27, about four miles from where Kahuku was saddling Kalaheo's Mustangs, 52-38.

If Kahuku wins tomorrow, the Red Raiders will be positioned to win their first divisional title in nine years with their final two games next week against non-contenders. Moanalua would still need to get past Kalaheo, which has worn the last five East and OIA crowns, on Wednesday at Kalaheo.

The first- and second-place East teams get passes through the opening round and home-court advantage in the quarterfinals of the 12-team OIA Championship Tournament, which starts May 1.

Last night, Kalaheo's Mustangs simply did not have the horses to stay with Kahuku. "They are much more athletic than we are and they beat us in transition a lot," analyzed assistant coach Kimo Furtado.

Down 22-19 at halftime, Kahuku outscored Kalaheo 18-5 in the third quarter to lead 37-27. Kalaheo was never closer than 11 in the last seven minutes of the game.

Kahuku was clearly faster, and quicker — scrambling for the many loose balls. But the clincher was 5-9 freshman Camilla Ah Hoy, who held 5-11 Taylor Smith, Kalaheo's latest golden transfer, to four points in the second half.

Latoya Wily, who transferred to Kalaheo last season to be part of the state's best public school program and back to Kahuku this season because she missed her life-long friends, explained:

"Coach (Wendy Anae) told us at halftime to step our game up. We had to shut down Smith. We tried several people on her in the first half and Camilla did the best, so she guarded her in the second half."

Smith, perhaps the most polished player in the OIA, scored 10 of Kalaheo's 22 points in the first half and four of the Mustangs' 16 in the second half.

She was still game-high scorer with 14. Monarisa Ale and Karla Tailele led Kahuku with 12 and 11. Wily had nine and was a stopper under the basket.
