The Buzz

In times of conflict

In these uncertain times, the Lizard Loft presents "Fus(e)siON," which explores facets of war and conflict through dance. Dancers from the University of Hawai'i-Manoa showcase the choreography of Wayles Haynes, Eun Kyung Kim and Malia Yamamoto. Pieces explore issues including attack and survival, conflict within one's own mind, biological warfare, and individual reactions to war within a community setting.

It's the ladies' turn to dance

Tau Dance Theater hosts "Ladies Night Out!" Saturday as the last production of its season. Featured will be the women of Tau Dance Theater: Marie Takazawa, Betsy Fisher, Ka'ohi Yojo, Esther Izuo and Nicole Young. Guests include Malamalama Hawai'i, the ladies of Kenny Endo's Taiko Drums of the Pacific and Devadasi Dance Theater. Enjoy the Korean stylings of Halla Pai Hum, and traditional Hawaiian from Auntie May Kama'i and Friends. Melveen Leed serves as emcee.

The moon and music

The Aston Hawaii Full Moon Concert series kicks off tonight with a free concert 6:30-9 at the Kapi'olani Park bandstand. Enjoy the antics of comics Lanai and Augie and delight in the harmonies of duo Keahiwai. American Idol contestant Jordan Segundo will serenade the crowd and perennial favorite Kapena, above, headlines. All this and an (almost) full moon, too! Kalapana at Kapono's

The legendary Kalapana returns to the spotlight for a two-night blowout at Kapono's. The group, celebrated since the 1970s, features members Gaylord Holomalia, D.J. Pratt, Malani Bilyeu and Kenji Sano and is known for classic favorites such as "Naturally," "The Hurt," "You Make It Hard," "Nightbird," "When the Morning Comes" and "Moon and Stars." The weekend gig acts as a CD release party for "Blue Album" and kick-off for the group's Asia Pacific Tour. Tonight's show features opening and closing performances by Henry Kapono and Jook Joint. Saturday night has Pacific Blue opening and Zanuck and the Reformers closing.

Song and dance of the Philippines

The University of the Philippines concert chorus stops in Hawai'i next week as part of its world tour. The chorus is known as one of the 10 best university choirs in the world, showcasing Filipino artistry in music and dance.

A concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Leeward Community College Theatre. Tickets are $10.

The choir also will perform a free mini-concert 12:30-1:30 p.m. Monday at Windward Community College, Paliku Theatre. 683-0143, 485-0390.


A blend of art and music

Studio 1 Art Gallery at 1 King St. is quickly becoming known as a special place for art and music. From 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. today, the studio will transform into an interactive art space. In one room, there will be a visual art expo with works from up-and-coming island artists that will interact with poets and musicians. Local groove band Quadraphonix will be featured in the next room, collaborating with dance performance artists and percussionists. Au's Shaolin Art Society's lion dancing and DJs Scottie Soul and A2Z round out the night.

"This is to support the artists, specifically Quadraphonix, who are going on tour. This is a fund-raiser for them," said artist Rachel Kaiser. "So we're calling out to everyone who supports the arts to come and support that night."

Hoppy Easter!

Easter is right around the corner, and that means egg hunts, treats and bunnies. Here's a quick look at activities this weekend:

  • Gentry Waipi'o Shopping Center will host some family fun 9-11 a.m. Saturday with egg hunts for keiki 12 and younger, a coloring contest and entertainment by Chris da Clown and Hypersquad. Free. 737-1048, 671-4838.
  • An Easter Eggstravaganza at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Koko Head District Park includes an egg hunt for keiki 12 and younger followed by games and activities. Free. 395-3096.
  • Koko Marina Center will celebrate with a petting zoo, entertainment, crafts and free pictures with the Easter Bunny 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. In conjunction with the Hawaii Foodbank's annual food drive. Free.
  • An Easter Egg-stravaganza 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Salt Lake Shopping Center features an Easter bonnet contest, craft table and free pictures with the Easter Bunny. Free. 735-8822.
  • The West Coast 4th Annual Easter Egg Hunt takes place 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Ma'ili Beach Park. Kapena, 3 Scoops Aloha and High Risk will entertain the crowd. Free. Hosted by Ark of Safety Christian Fellowship; 696-3781.
  • Ward Warehouse will host a variety of activities Saturday. Visit a BunnyCares Workshop 10 a.m.-4 p.m. to learn about proper care for house rabbits. There will be a bunny petting zoo and BunnyCares lecture 11-11:30 a.m. Also: keiki crafts (11 a.m.-2 p.m.) and an Easter Bunny treat trail (2-3 p.m.) Free. 591-8411.
  • Show off your creative skills at the Windward Mall Hawaiian 105 KINE Crayola Hoppy Easter Celebration. Fashion an Easter basket or bonnet, then show it off during the Easter Parade. There will also be keiki bouncers, make 'n' take crafts and prizes, noon-2 p.m. Saturday. Free. 235-1143.
  • Washington Place will be open 1-3 p.m. Sunday for the annual Easter Egg hunt for kids 1-4 years old. There will be an Easter Hat contest, petting zoo, face painting and Bungie the Clown. Free. 586-0240.


Celebrating the Dole Plantation maze

The "World's Largest Maze" is turning 5, and in its honor Dole Plantation is hosting an a-maze-ing bash with entertainment by Ka Hula O Ululani, Na Kuku Oluolu I Ka Hula, Helemano Elementary School 'Ukulele Club and the Honolulu Fire Department's Firehouse Band; and keiki fun such as Easter egg dyeing, air bouncers and characters Pineapple Pete and Hello Kitty. Browse the country market full of fresh produce, flowers and baked goods.

It all takes place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. 621-8408.


Final weekend to go wild about 'Harry'

Mei-Ling Santos (Nani Morita) wants son Maverick (Julius Ledda) to pay attention as other sons, from left center, Butchie (Devon Nekoba) and Wyatt (Moses Goods) look on in "Heads by Harry," in its final performances this weekend at Kumu Kahua. The play, about a Hilo family, is based on the novel by Lois-Ann Yamanaka. Show times are 8 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
