Give 'Devil' its due with our book club

Are you speed-reading out there? You should be: the Honolulu Advertiser Book Club's current selection, "Carter Meets the Devil" by Glen David Gold, is a hefty 480 pages, so you'll need to forge ahead to complete it by May 9.

We don't think there is a Hawai'i connection this time: Gold has never been to the Islands. Nor, so far as we know, did the subject of the novel, magician Charles Carter, ever visit here. If you find an Island connection, let us know: bookclub@honoluluadvertiser.com.

Something else to look for: Gold weaves his name cleverly into a bit of trickery in the novel. Watch for it, and let us know if you find it. Free bookmarks to all who participate!

Waipahu girl wins 'Star Search' round

Kaitlin Kiyan of Waipahu, already a singing veteran at age 12 with a number of local productions behind her, won the preliminary round of the "Star Search" Junior Singer competition Wednesday night.

Kaitlin sang "Paper Moon" and judge Ben Stein called it "fresh, sparkling, new, fabulous" because of her "power and personality." She tied with Vanessa Campagna of Beaver Falls, Pa., but won in a tie-breaker based on home scoring.

She competes again at 7 p.m. April 25 on CBS.

Travel Channel to feature Big Island

Big Island photographer Bryan Lowry, who has shot lava flows at Kilauea Volcano extensively since moving to the island in 1991, was among those asked to work with a Travel Channel crew for a production of "Secrets of Hawai'i's National Parks," airing at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Monday on the Travel Channel.

Four of Lowry's images will appear on the show, along with footage of walking on hot lava flows at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
