Tonight's Must-See
"Planes, Trains and Automobiles" (1987), 8 p.m., ABC Family. Steve Martin plays a businessman desperately trying to get home for Thanksgiving. He meets a lonely and oafish guy, beautifully played by the late John Candy. They have the usual travel woes in a fun film skillfully directed by John Hughes.
Of Local Note
"Star Search," 7 p.m., CBS. Talented 12-year-old Honolulu vocalist/actress Kaitlyn Kiyan competes. Her lengthy local acting resume includes Diamond Head Theatre's "You Somebody" and Army Community Theatre's "Oliver." The latter scored her a 2002 Po'okela Award nom for lead female in a musical.
Of Note
"Fastlane," 7 p.m., Fox. This launches a two-parter. Van (Peter Facinelli) has a drink with a gorgeous hotel employee (Ali Landry). It turns out that someone who seems to be watching him has spiked his drink.
"GoldenEye" (1995), 8 p.m., USA Network. Pierce Brosnan took over the James Bond role here. The story is so-so but has lots of action in an effort to keep Russian weapons out of the wrong hands.
"Hack," 8 p.m., CBS. Mike hesitantly bonds with his dying father, with whom he's argued for years.
"Robot Rivals" premiere, 3 and 6 p.m., Do It Yourself Network. Robots really can do more on TV than fight each other. This relatively new cable channel (DIY for short) films a tournament in which college students are given spare parts to create robots for such tasks as kicking a ball, cutting down a tree or putting toys away. There are 14 teams, continuing through July 11. Tonight's opener has Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech.
"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," 9 p.m., NBC. Police are told that a woman killed someone in self-defense at a party. A surprise puts the case in a different perspective.
