Fire destroys Maui home on flank of Haleakala

KANAIO, Maui A house in remote Upper Kanaio on the southwest slope of Haleakala was destroyed by fire yesterday before emergency crews could get to it.
A helicopter pilot spotted the blaze and reported it at 10:23 a.m.. The house was a burning pile of rubble when firefighters arrived shortly before 11 a.m., said Assistant Fire Chief David Kamalani.
The house was accessible by four-wheel-drive vehicles only, he said, and firefighters fought the flames with buckets of water from an on-site tank. The fire was extinguished at 3:15 p.m.
Kamalani said the owner could not be contacted, and no damage estimate could be made.
