Kaumakapili to be renovated

Advertiser Staff

Kaumakapili Church will hold Easter services tomorrow, then close the sanctuary to worshippers as construction gets under way as part of the church's renovation project.

A traditional Hawaiian ceremony "with the finality of closing the doors and tying of the maile," will take place, said church member Henry Maunakea.

"The church bell will ring for the last time and the congregation will walk over to Hale Kamika, our temporary space for worship for seven months of construction," he said.

After a concluding prayer of dedication and the closing hymn, refreshments will be served. Kahu David Kaupu will preside over the service.

Centennial celebration set

More than 700 people from the Mainland and South Korea will help the Korean United Methodist Churches in America celebrate its centennial Thursday to April 27 at the Hawai'i Convention Center.

The closing service of the Korean centennial will be at 2 p.m. April 27 at Christ United Methodist Church, 1639 Ke'eaumoku St., with Bishop Mary Ann Swenson and the Rev. Barbara Grace Ripple welcoming participants. Speakers include Bishop Hae-jong Kim of the Pittsburgh area; the Rev. Randy Day; Bishop Jinho Kim; and Ronald Moon, chief justice of the state Supreme Court.

The choir of Naeri Methodist Church in Incheon, South Korea, will be on hand, as will the Ewha Alumni Female Choir, whose members are graduates of Ewha Women's High School, the first institution for women's education founded by Methodist missionaries. The Hawai'i Korean United Methodist Churches choir will be presented in the opening service Thursday.

Evening services at the convention center and the closing service are open to the public. Information: Kyuwoo Nam at 536-7244.

Wedemeyer as guest speaker

Wedemeyer and his wife, Lucy, have been the subject of a PBS documentary, CBS movie of the week, and now the current documentary, "Courage to Live," which chronicles the couple's past 40 years.
