UH to host workshop on energy

Advertiser Staff

A daylong Earth Day workshop Tuesday at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa will study energy use within the state and other related issues.

Discussion group topics will include renewable and alternative energy sources; conservation; transportation; architecture and urban planning; public policy; and social justice.

Deane Neubauer, the university's vice president for academic affairs, will lead an energy panel. An energy expo will have commercial and community group exhibits, and crafts, food and entertainment are planned.

The Honolulu city government and the UH Office of Sustainability are the main sponsors the sessions, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Campus Center. The university's Pacific Action Alliance, the Associated Students of the University of Hawai'i and the marketing agency Joots are co-sponsors.

On-campus parking is available for $3. Participants also can park at Manoa District Park, where shuttles to the event will be available.

The "Sustainability Workshop, Teach-in and Expo" is the first of five events stemming from a Jan. 11 workshop sponsored by the city and the university that drew more than 1,000 people. Organizers hope that the community involvement will lead to the creation of a City Sustainability Charter to guide management of Island resources well into the century.

The next workshops in June, September and November will cover land use and agriculture, natural resources, the economy and transportation.

The sponsors hope to complete the charter for sustainability by January.

Details of Tuesday's event are available at the Web site www.earthdayhawaii.org.
