STAN ENGELDORF will manage the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort, Marriott International's largest hotel outside the U.S. Mainland, as the 1,310-room property emerges from a $60 million modernization. The appointment coincides with the naming of three general managers — with a collective 76 years in the hospitality industry among them — to oversee key resorts among the chain's 13 local properties.

Engeldorf is no stranger to renovations: He comes to Honolulu from Maui, where he was general manager of the 391-room Maui Marriott Resort and Ocean Club, where he oversaw the yearlong, $70 million renovation that was completed in 2000. Over a career that started with Marriott in 1976, he has held positions in Indiana; Florida; South Carolina; Vail, Colo.; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; and Atlanta.

Taking Engeldorf's place as general manager of the Maui Marriott Resort and Ocean Club is BILL COUNTRYMAN, previously area director of operations for Marriott's lodging division. In 1997, Countryman was part of the team that evaluated more than 30 hotels in 12 countries during Marriott International's purchase of the Renaissance Hotel Group.

Also transferring from Maui to O'ahu is CHRIS TATUM, former general manager of the 345-room Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort, who will be general manager of the 387-room JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa. Tatum was also opening resident manager for the JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia in 1997.
