LEEWARD O'AHU

Crash victim identified

The medical examiner's office has identified the man killed in a three-vehicle crash in Leeward O'ahu Saturday as Cleighton Adams, 52.

The 26-year-old man who caused the crash near Hakimo Road that shut down Farrington Highway for hours was speeding and under the influence of alcohol, police said.

He was taken into police custody and released pending further investigation.

Police said he was heading west on Farrington near Hakimo Road when his sedan crossed the median and hit a Ford pickup headed in the opposite direction. The impact sent the Ford truck into a crash with a Chevrolet pickup driven by Adams.

Adams was on the way to an Easter egg hunt with his wife and 9-year-old son, who were both hurt in the crash.

Officer's suit gets new trial

A second trial is under way in U.S. District Court in the discrimination lawsuit filed by former Maui police officer Bonnie Burke.

In May 1999, a jury rejected Burke's complaint against Maui County that she had suffered discrimination because she was a woman and Caucasian. But the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals later ruled that "highly prejudicial" testimony about Burke's sexual history should not have been introduced at trial.

Burke was one of five female police officers to file such complaints. Four reached settlements, but Burke rejected a proposed settlement.

Maui County attorneys say Burke was not harassed or mistreated.
