Theocharidis named MPSF player of year

University of Hawai'i senior outside hitter Costas Theocharidis was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's volleyball Player of the Year for the second time.

Voting was done by MPSF men's volleyball coaches, who also selected four other Warriors.

Senior outside hitter Tony Ching and sophomore middle blocker Delano Thomas were named to the second team. Senior outside hitter Eyal Zimet was picked to the third team and junior setter Kimo Tuyay was named to the Honorable Mention.

Theocharidis also was named the conference's top player in 2001.

Theocharidis, a member of the Greek National Team, is one of the most decorated Warrior volleyball players. His honors include three-time AVCA First-Team All-America, 2002 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America, All-MPSF First-team ('01, '02), 2001 AVCA National Player of the Year, and 2002 NCAA Finals Most Valuable Player,

This season, Theocharidis became his school's first 2,000 kill performer and posted match highs of 29 and 25 kills versus the Waves, with a season-high 31 kills in a loss to Stanford.

The defending NCAA champion Warriors play Brigham Young Thursday in the MPSF semifinals. The tournament is held at Pepperdine.
