THE LEFT LANE
Volunteer for Earth

Advertiser Staff and News Services

President Bush has asked all federal agencies to support volunteer service this Earth Day. "In the three decades since the first Earth Day celebration, our air is cleaner, our water is purer and our natural resources are better protected. ... All Americans can help protect our natural resources," the president said.

The administration's EarthDay.gov Web site lists environmental service opportunities; though Hawai'i listings are sparse, there is a link to the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, which holds an Earth Day Fair noon to 4 p.m. today.

Local-style styling

A new local-kine product called Flavahs is packaged in water bottles and smells good enough to gulp. But Flavahs comes with a warning: "Eh! No drink!" because it's food for your hair.

Honolulu's Image salon hairstylist Benedict Palmeri created the line of concentrated shampoos and conditioners, which are bottled in Kane'ohe and come in green tea, tangerine, grapefruit and tropical apple flavors.

The shampoos start at $9 for an 8-ounce bottle and are available at the Image salon downtown; Hino's at the Ala Moana shopping center; Head Arts in 'Aiea; Panache in Kaimuki; Patty Ann's in Wahiawa; Flhair Design near Ala Moana; or through J&J Beauty Supplies in Kane'ohe (247-5002).

Ironman auctioned

How much would people pay to be in one of the world's most grueling athletic events? Quite a bit, apparently. A 10-day eBay auction, in which 20 spots in the 25th Anniversary Ironman Triathlon World Championship were available, raised $307,000 for the Kona Family YMCA; 15 of the 20 slots were bid on.

The highest individual bid placed was $32,700 for a slot in the 40-49 age category. One of the two available "pairs" slots went for $45,100.
