Three inmates plead not guilty in escape

Three Halawa prison inmates who allegedly broke out of the facility on April 4 and who were captured six days later pleaded not guilty in Circuit Court yesterday to escape and other charges.

Albert Batalona 27, Warren Elicker, 25, and David Scribner, 20, had been indicted on charges of second-degree escape, which carries a maximum five-year prison term.

Batalona and Scribner also were indicted on second-degree robbery charges.

Police said they hijacked a Honda Civic from two men at the Stadium Mall shortly after the breakout and stole a cellular phone from one of the men.

The three were captured at separate locations in Windward O'ahu within a half hour of each other.

Circuit Judge Daniel Kochi set a tentative trial date of June 23.


Kalihi man badly hurt in mugging

A 51-year-old Kalihi man suffered a fractured jaw and critical injuries to his throat and chest when he was mugged yesterday outside a Kokea Street bar in Kapalama.

Police said the man, who had two stab wounds to his chest, may have been struck in the face with a metal pipe.

The attack occurred in front of Leslie's Place, 549 Kokea St., at 2:07 a.m. Call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME by cell phone.


Suspect charged in home burglary

Police charged 36-year-old Etuale Etuale Sua on Saturday in connection with the burglary of a home on the 1600 block of Liliha Street on April 14.

The third eldest of eight Waipahu brothers, seven of whom have been convicted of felony crimes in Hawai'i, Sua is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail on charges of first-degree burglary.

Sua was arrested Friday at a North Kuakini Street bakery and was charged after being identified by the victim.


Teen arrested in rock throwing

One of several young men who police saw throwing rocks from an overpass at westbound cars on H-1 Freeway Saturday morning was captured at a nearby public housing complex.

Officers saw the 18-year-old man throwing rocks from the Radford pedestrian overpass at about 2:30 a.m., police said.

He was with a group that ran into the nearby public housing area

Six cars were damaged but no one was injured, police said.


Pair accused of stealing bananas

Theft charges are pending against a 54-year-old man and woman, 29, who were arrested Sunday in Kahuku for trying to steal an estimated $1,000 worth of bananas from Soukaseum Farm, police said.

Police stopped to question the pair, who were standing near two vehicles on Kamehameha Highway at 2:40 a.m. Police said they became suspicious when they saw bundles of bananas on the roadside near the vehicles.
