Bihag, Porter win OIA tennis titles

By Dennis Anderson
Advertiser Staff Writer

Chloe Bihag of Waipahu won her second singles championship in a row and Dillon Porter of Kahuku won his first with a kind of ironic twist yesterday in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association tennis finals.

Bihag, a junior, defeated Nicole Sakai of Pearl City, 6-2, 6-3, and Porter beat Mark Ilagan of Farrington, 6-0, 6-2, at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Ilagan is the younger brother of Anthony Ilagan, who knocked off Porter in the semifinals last year.

In the all-sisters, all-Mililani doubles final, Jena Gamiao and Audra Takara defeated Jaymi Gamiao and Ashley Takara, 6-7 (7-2), 6-2, 6-2.

Siblings did not carry the day, however, as Wataru Mino and Fuyuki Samejima of Kaiser beat brothers Andrew and Ryan Murakami of Leilehua, 6-2, 6-2, for the boys doubles championship.

"I had a good day and Mark had a bad day," said Porter, who bettered Ilagan for the third time in three meetings this year.

"It was really windy, and the ball was kind of moving around," Porter said. "I ran around almost every backhand and hit a forehand. I was really aggressive and I controlled the points."

In the girls singles final, Bihag said, "I think I caught (Sakai) on an off-day." Bihag was third in states last year. "I want to do better this year so I will get some attention from colleges," said Bihag, an 'Ewa Beach resident who is Hawai'i's No. 2 ranked girls 18s player behind Heidi Kaloi.

Third-place results yesterday:

Boys: Singles —Jaime Migia (Moanalua) def. Evan Hirata (Roosevelt), 6-0, 6-1. Doubles — Jay Abrigo/Blaine Murobayashi (Mililani) def. Musashi Ito/Win Woo Kim (McKinley), 6-2, 6-1.

Girls: Singles — Sarah Galon (Leilehua) def. Julienne Yamamoto (Moanalua) default. Doubles — Tiffany Villanueva/Cassie Yoneshige (Leilehua) def. Asami Nagata/Jaime Yoshino (Kaiser), 6-7 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

Punahou wins ILH: Punahou's girls won their first Interscholastic League of Honolulu tennis championship in 11 years yesterday when Kristen Wo took a match that was interrupted by rain last Thursday with Wo leading 1-0 and the second set tied 3-3.

Wo won the second set 6-4 as Punahou beat Iolani, 3-2.

Iolani or Kamehameha had won the last 10 ILH championships.

Today, host Punahou and Iolani, both with 13-1 records, play off for the ILH boys title at 4 p.m.

SAILING

Punahou prevails: Punahou won the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title yesterday to conclude the first high-school league sanctioned sailing season in the nation.

William Pochevera was skipper and Tai Conley crew on the Punahou boat that won three of the five races and finished second in the other two. Skipper Drew Robb and crew Quinn Franzen were in the second Punahou boat.

In a sport where the lowest score wins, Punahou's season total was 771 to 1,107 for second-place Mid-Pacific. Martin Sterling, who skippered the most individual victories for the season, including two yesterday, led Maryknoll to third place with 1,156 points.

The water off Waikiki and Magic Island was choppy and about 10 boats capsized. There were 15 boats in each of the five races.

"This first season was possible only because of the tremendous support of the Waikiki and Hawai'i yacht clubs," ILH sailing coordinator Tom Holden said.

Final standings: 1, Punahou 771. 2, Mid-Pacific 1,107. 3. Maryknoll 1,156. 4, Iolani 1,759. 5, Sacred Hearts 2,268. 6, Waldorf 2,932. 7, x-Lutheran 3,079. 8, x-Academy of Pacific 3,208. 9. x-Kamehameha 3,314.
