UH women fifth after first round of WAC golf

The University of Hawai'i is in fifth place after the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championships yesterday at the Kapolei Golf Course.

San Jose State, Tulsa and Nevada all shot 305 in gusty wind conditions to share the lead in the seven-team field. Texas-El Paso is fourth at 316, followed by Hawai'i (317), Boise State (320) and Southern Methodist (334). Tulsa is the four-time defending champion.

Nevada's Meghan Ingalls shot an even par 72 to lead medallists, followed by Tulsa's Suzie Fisher (73) and Julie Tvede (74), and San Jose State's Ashley Gomes (75).

UH's Tara Chappell is tied with six others at 76.

The second round of the 54-hole tournament will be held today, starting at 10:02 a.m.

SOFTBALL

HPU sweeps Biola: Kristin Fujii became Hawai'i Pacific's career leader in home runs when she hit a grand slam to lead the Sea Warriors to a non-league doubleheader sweep of Biola yesterday at HPU's Windward campus.

HPU (28-20) won the first game, 9-3, and took the second, 4-0. Biola is 22-28.

Fujii hit her grand slam in the first game, giving her 11 homers, breaking by one the mark of Karen Masuda set in 1988.

Hawai'i-Hilo shut out twice: Western New Mexico swept visiting Hawai'i-Hilo, 1-0 and 3-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference showdown between the conference's top two teams.

Angela Slaugh, the 2002 PacWest Pitcher of the Year, beat Vulcan freshman Leo Sing Chow in a pitchers' duel to win the opener.

Slaugh (23-3) allowed one hit (Kayla Kahuli's double) with 13 strikeouts, while Sing Chow (13-3) yielded four hits and struck out two.

Debbie Yescas' single in the fourth scored the only run.

Tiffany Mondhink pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts to win the second game.

Western New Mexico is 43-6 overall and 13-1 in the PacWest. UHH is 26-15 and 10-4. They play another doubleheader today.

BASEBALL

Hawai'i-Hilo drops two: University of Washington swept visiting Hawai'i-Hilo, 13-1 and 9-2, yesterday at Husky Ballpark.

The Huskies (25-12) scored seven runs on five hits in the second inning of the opener to put away the Vulcans (8-32) early.

Kaliko Oligo and Sean Tamura each had two hits for Hilo, with Tamura's fifth-inning home run preventing a shutout.

Washington pounded two UHH pitchers for 16 hits in the second game.

TENNIS

BYUH sweeps honors: Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Jan Krejci and Adrienn Hegedus have been voted Pacific West Conference Male and Female Tennis Players of the Year for the second straight year by league coaches.

Krejci and Hegedus, sophomores from Budapest, Hungary, received all the first-place votes.

BYUH's David Porter was named PacWest Coach of the Year after guiding both the men's and women's teams to conference titles on April 12 in Billings, Mont.

SURFING

Meet in Australia postponed: The 2003 Rip Curl Pro was postponed yesterday because of inconsistent 2-foot surf at Bells Beach in Australia. Round three of the World Championship Tournament event must still be completed.

BOWLING

Hiyane advances: Moanalua High School junior Cy Hiyane won the Coca-Cola Roll-Off junior bowling tournament last weekend at Schofield Barracks and has advanced to the national tournament in Missouri, where he will be Hawai'i's representative competing against 49 others, one from each state.
