THE LEFT LANE
Getting whipped up over a wet noodle

Advertiser Staff and News Services

What does some guy from Terre Haute, Indiana, know about ramen? A whole lot we in Hawai'i don't know, apparently. And maybe don't want to know. Such as: You can make stroganoff with it. You can make a casserole with cheese. Or even something called Hawaiian Chicken Ramen — yes, it involves canned pineapple.

The guy in question is former starving college student Eric Hites, and his recipes are contained in the cleverly named "Everybody Loves Ramen" (Andrews McMeel Publishing, paper, $9.95). It's touted as "The perfect gift for the graduate," presumably because ramen is about all starving college students can afford to eat. The book includes fun facts, ramen word games and puzzles and the oddest collection of recipes we've ever seen.

Jacko's home movies will launch sweeps

JACKSON
The May sweeps begin this week (yes, in April) and you know what that means: Another Michael Jackson special! And this time we get to see: "Michael Jackson's Private Home Movies," setting the tone for the sweeps, because Fox is airing it on the first night of the ratings derby (tomorrow night).

"Leaving behind the glitz and glamour of film, music videos and television, Michael Jackson opens up his private home movie collection, giving unprecedented access to thousands of hours of never-before-seen footage revealing his real life, family and friends," Fox said in its news release. Oh, please.

Down from farm and they've seen Paree

Out of the farmhouse and straight to the Paris runways, overalls are a take on the utilitarian trend in clothing. Dolce & Gabbana and Marni showed them for spring. A pregnant Sarah Jessica Parker was photographed more than once wearing them.

Fashion overalls are anything but blue-collar. Fun fabrics, sexy silhouettes and a hint of military detailing turn them flirty and fun. Designers disregard the typical shapeless design, opting for fitted, and even backless, versions. The overalls above are by Los Angeles-based Hot Kiss, usually sold locally at Wet Seal and Macy's for $20-$50.
