Punahou edges Iolani to win 31st straight ILH boys title

Advertiser Staff

Punahou School won its 31st consecutive Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys tennis championship yesterday, but "it was much more stressful than I would have liked," coach Rusty Komori said.

Punahou defeated Iolani, 3-2, in a playoff before a packed house of about 250 at Punahou. Iolani had ended Punahou's 200-plus match ILH victory streak last week, 4-1, to force the playoff.

Iolani was within two points of winning again yesterday. With the scored tied 2-2, Iolani's second doubles team of Torin Ching and Sean Morales led Punahou's Robbie Lim and Michael Azuma 5-4 in the third set with the game at 30-30.

Lim/Azuma, who had come back from 0-3 in the third, pulled it out, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

Lim, the reigning state singles champion, was playing doubles for the first time in two years. "I was really nervous with all that legacy on my shoulders," he said.

Iolani won both singles, the second when Punahou's player retired with cramps in the third set.
