Kamehameha edges Saint Louis

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The struggle for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball regular-season championship fittingly will last another two days, as Iolani and Kamehameha each won their finales yesterday to force a playoff tomorrow for the title.

The playoff is set for 6 p.m. at Ala Wai Field, with the winner also clinching a state tournament berth.

Iolani (11-3) secured its playoff spot first with a 19-1 rout of Damien at Ala Wai in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.

Kamehameha (11-3) later had a much tougher time in rallying past Saint Louis, 4-2, at Joey DeSa Field. The Crusaders jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Keoni Ruth tied the score with a two-run homer in the third.

Travis Young and Ruth then hit solo home runs in the sixth and Isaac Kamai finished with a five-hitter to help the Warriors seal it.

"We started kinda slow, but I had confidence we could come back," said Ruth, a senior shortstop who bats leadoff. "We've been through some ups and downs this season, but this shows we can win the big game when we need to."

Yesterday became a must-win situation for Kamehameha after it was shocked by Pac-Five, 13-9, Saturday. The Warriors committed five errors in that loss, which briefly dropped them into second place before Iolani also lost, 4-3, to Punahou.

"We didn't have our focus on Saturday, but it's in the past," Ruth said. "We've put it behind us."

Saint Louis took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles by Danny Lee and Bobby George. Young led off the Kamehameha third with a walk, then Ruth hit a towering homer over the fence in left-center.

Young and Ruth hit back-to-back homers to right with one out in the sixth to put Kamehameha up 4-2.

"That's one of the toughest lineups; they really swing the pipe," Saints coach Nick Wong said.
