Ex-Iolani coach to assist 'Bows

Advertiser Staff

Bob Barry, a longtime head boys soccer coach at Iolani School, is returning to Hawai'i to become an assistant coach for the University of Hawai'i women's team.

Barry leaves the men's head coaching job at Willamette (Ore.) after a one-year stint in which his team finished 6-11-2.

He will assist in goalkeeping and defense, according to Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing.

"He comes with a lot of experience, and we'll be able to talk things through," Tenzing said. "We'll be able to make tactical adjustments and decide the direction of the program. He brings a mature perspective."

Barry, who coached at Iolani for 23 years and led the Raiders to five state championships in the 1970s and '80s, was chosen Western Region High School Coach of the Year three times by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He compiled a 328-116-46 record.

Barry also coached the men's team at Brigham Young-Hawai'i from 1998 until the program was dropped after the 2000 season.

He was an assistant at the University of Richmond, Va., in 1996-97 and an assistant at the University of Massachusetts in 1985.

Barry will take over for Wendy Miyashiro, a former Rainbow Wahine (1996-1999) who earned all-Western Athletic Conference second-team and all-academic honors.
