Three in running to coach UHH volleyball

Hawai'i-Hilo yesterday released the names of the top three candidates for the school's vacant women's volleyball coaching job.

Chaminade's Glennie Adams, Salt Lake Community College's Julie Morgan and Baldwin Wallace College's Victoria Brault are coaches "the selection committee deemed as top candidates," said Jim DeMello, committee chairman and UHH assistant athletic director.

Adams, a former UH-Hilo player and assistant coach, is the head women's volleyball coach at Chaminade, an NCAA Division II program. She is also assistant athletic director and senior women's administrator.

Morgan is head volleyball coach and a physical education instructor at Salt Lake Community College. She also played for Peterson at Punahou School.

Brault is head volleyball coach and assistant softball coach at NCAA Division III Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio.

RUNNING

Boston finishers: Twenty-five athletes from Hawai'i started the 107th annual Boston Marathon Monday, with 23 finishing the 26.2-mile race.

GOLF

UH women fifth: The University of Hawai'i remained in fifth place in the women's Western Athletic Conference Golf Championships yesterday at the Kapolei Golf Course.

Hawai'i, which has a two-round total of 641, trails defending champion Tulsa (614), San Jose State (615) and Nevada (615), and Boise State (638).

Tara Chappell is the top Hawai'i golfer, tying for eighth place with a 155 total. Tulsa's Julie Tvede leads with 148.

The final round begins today at 9:15 a.m.

SOFTBALL

Hawai'i-Hilo splits: Kayla Kahuli hit a three-run homer and Leinani Hashida belted a solo shot as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Western New Mexico, 9-4, yesterday to earn a split of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Silver City, N.M.

Tiffany Mondhink's bases-loaded single in the seventh lifted Western New Mexico to a 3-2 win in the opener.
