Local professionals offering free lessons

More than 30 Aloha Section PGA members are offering free 10-minute lessons to amateurs next month during the sixth nationwide "Play Golf America" campaign.

The annual "growth-of-the-game" initiative was created by PGA of America and Golf Digest to help golfers enjoy the game more. This year, Golf for Women magazine and The Golf Channel have joined as partners.

Last year, more than 4,000 pros provided nearly 75,000 lessons.

• Amatour 2003: The second season of Amatour Hawaii starts this weekend with the Coral Creek Classic, sponsored by Verizon. Play begins at 11:44 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The field includes defending champion Mark West, qualifying school co-champion Eric Sonnenberg and 2002 Amatour Player of the Year Joe Phengsavath, along with Travis Toyama, Mark Chun, Wendell Kop, Randy Shibuya, Paul Kimura, Blaine Kimura and Guy Yamamoto.

This is the first of six events that determine Player of the Year.
