Tulsa wins WAC women's golf

Advertiser Staff

With junior Julie Tvede shooting the only sub-par round in a blustery tournament, Tulsa won its fifth consecutive Western Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship yesterday at Kapolei Golf Course.

The Golden Hurricane shot a tournament-low round of 300 (best four of five scores) to finish at 914. That was nine shots better than Nevada and 11 ahead of San Jose State, which both went into the final round one back.

Tvede, a junior from Denmark, closed with a 2-under-par 70 and finished at 218. She took medalist honors by nine over SJSU's Ashley Gomes (75). Courtney Jones, one of three TU freshmen, boosted the 'Canes by closing with 73, the day's second-best round.

"I knew if our freshmen played well we'd win," said Holly Hair, Tulsa's first-year coach. "The conditions were tough, but we get a lot of wind in Tulsa in the spring so it was not that unusual for us — just not three days of it."

Nevada junior Alana Condon (80-231), named the WAC Player of the Year yesterday, finished fifth. Junior Rene Krause (83-241) had Hawai'i's best finish at 21st. Bobbie Arakawa (88-246), the 'Bows only senior, was 23rd in her final event.

The Rainbow Wahine took sixth place, one better than last year.

"The winds were gusting more than 30 mph all three days," said UH coach Marga Stubblefield, who was "proud" of her team's finish. "That was more wind than we're used to playing in and we're more used to it than the other teams."

SURFING

• Irons moves on: World champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i was the only Hawai'i surfer to advance to the quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Pro yesterday.

The fourth round was completed in messy waves of 4 to 6 feet at Johanna, Australia.

Irons led his fourth-round heat from start to finish to eliminate Brazil's Neco Padaratz. Irons' best two waves received scores of 9.07 and 8.67.

Irons is scheduled to meet former world champ Mark Occhilupo of Australia in the quarterfinals. Occhilupo eliminated six-time former world champ Kelly Slater.

Hawai'i surfers Kalani Robb and Sunny Garcia were eliminated in the fourth round.

BASEBALL

• HPU beats UC San Diego: Ikaika DuPont, Casey Onaga and Shay Hirota each had two hits to lift Hawai'i Pacific to a 9-4 victory over host UC San Diego.

Hawai'i Pacific is 23-22, San Diego is 24-24.

• UH-Hilo loses: Four pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout to lead Pacific to a 10-0 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo yesterday at Stockton, Calif.

Pacific is 24-18, UH-Hilo 8-34.
