Waipahu girl advances in 'Star Search' round

Advertiser Staff and News Services

KAITLIN
Waipahu's Kaitlin Kiyan, 12, won the Junior Singer preliminary round on CBS' "Star Search," and returns for the semifinal runoff at 7 tonight on Channel 9.

According to her father, Paul Kiyan, she'll sing "Waiting for Life," a tune from "Once on This Island," a musical in which she performed at the Kaimuki Performing Arts Center.

"She's fine, she's excited, she's ready to go," said Dad. "I think she loves the presence of being that close to show biz; she has a dressing room with her name on it, and she says the backstage people are very nice."

Mom Carol is with Kaitlin, and because of many Los Angeles relatives, Kaitlin hasn't felt homesick. Win or lose, she's coming home Saturday because of a May 3 gig here. If she's victorious, she will return to "Star Search" for the finals, set for May 19.

Kaitlin may be remembered for roles in "Oliver!" at Army Community Theatre, "You Somebody" at Diamond Head Theatre, and "Honk!" at Manoa Valley Theatre.

This summer, she'll be in a revival of Lisa Matsumoto's "On Dragonfly Wings" at the Hawai'i Theatre.

Because the show airs at 5 p.m. L.A. time (2 p.m. here), supporters need to long on at www.cbs.com/star between 2 and 2:15 p.m. today to vote for her.

Case rocks out on local radio station

CASE
U.S. Rep. Ed Case, D-Hawai'i, visited this week with Rich West and Beau Hodge, morning-show deejays for the Big Kahuna, 105.9 FM, and talked about the war with Iraq, recent budget votes and his first 100 days as a member of Congress. Then he got down to business, revealing his love for classic rock.

Case said he and another freshman congressman from Macon, Ga., have a lot in common: They're both big fans of the Allman Brothers Band.

Then he played a few of his favorite tunes, including the Allman Brothers' "Jessica" and Bad Company's "Bad Company" (no comment).
