Advertiser receives 15 Pa'i awards

The Honolulu Advertiser won 15 awards yesterday in the Hawai'i Publishers Association annual Pa'i Awards contest, including seven first-place awards, more top awards than any other publication in the state.
The awards were for work published in 2002.
Investigative reporter Jim Dooley won two first-place awards, one for his report on tax breaks given to the producers of "Blue Crush," and the other for his stories detailing pressure placed on clients of the Fresh Start halfway house. Dooley also received a second-place award in the investigative reporting category for his stories about irregularities in the management of the state Housing and Community Development Corp.
The Advertiser business staff won two first-place awards, one for a special report on the economic aftermath a year after the Sept. 11 attacks, and the other for coverage by Susan Hooper of the collapse of merger talks between Hawaiian and Aloha airlines.
In sports news photography, Jeff Widener won first place for coverage of the Honolulu Marathon. Deborah Booker won first place in the newsprint essay photography category for her work on the life of North Shore surfers.
Managing editor David Montesino received the first-place award for cover design for his design of the front page on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Other awards The Advertiser received were second and third place in spot news coverage; second place, editorial series, Jan TenBruggencate; third place, editorial column, Lee Cataluna; second place, business and industry reporting, Susan Hooper; second place, feature photography on newsprint, Eugene Tanner; third place, design, David Montesino; second place, illustration, Martha Hernandez.
