Two injured in Salt Lake fire

An 86-year-old man suffered second-degree burns on his face, legs and forearm in a fire that gutted his two-story Salt Lake residence yesterday.

The cause of the 1:20 a.m. fire at 1120 Pu'olo Drive was a short-circuit in the electric cord of a fan, said Capt. Kenison Tejada, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman. He said the department is reminding homeowners to be sure the cords on their electrical appliances don't have sharp bends or kinks in them.

Damage is estimated at $180,000 to the structure and $20,000 to contents.

The man and his granddaughter, 38, were treated at Straub Hospital. The woman was treated for smoke inhalation and released. Her grandfather remains hospitalized.

Dissanyake faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 when he is sentenced on July 7.
