Brian Casey, former Honolulu councilman

Brian Casey, former political writer for The Advertiser and a former city councilman, died after a long illness in Salem, Mass., on April 20. He was 77.

Casey covered murders and volcano eruptions as well as general and primary elections. He came to Honolulu in 1949 and worked as The Advertiser's police and city hall reporter before taking over the political beat. He married another journalist on the paper who became well known as "Scoops" Casey, author of "Casey At Bat" and "Ms. Fixit" columns. She is now Tsuneko Krieger.
In 1963, after a stint as assistant city editor, Brian Casey went to work as Mayor Neal Blaisdell's information director. He served on the City Council from 1968 to 1970, then was named deputy director of auditoriums by Mayor Frank Fasi.
Casey was born in Chelsea, Mass., and graduated from Northeastern University. He returned to the Northeast in 1986 and remarried.
Survivors in Hawai'i are sons Leo and Sean. Casey's wife, stepchildren and numerous relatives survive him in Massachusetts.
