Hung Lum Chun, 91, active in community

Hung Lum "Aluma" Chun, a retired businessman who was active in the Chinese community, died April 18 in Honolulu. He was 91.

Chun was born on Oct. 8, 1911, in Honolulu and he graduated from Punahou School and the University of Hawai'i. He was the son of merchant C.Q. Yee Hop, founder of the Mun Lun Chinese School.

Soon after receiving his degree, Chun joined his family's business and took over many of his father's companies. He was president of C.Q. Yee Hop and Co., a wholesale and retail meat and grocery firm; King Market, a fish store; American Brewing Co., which produced Royal Beer; and Queen Realty Co., a subsidiary of American Brewery.

Chun also was involved in many community activities and was a member of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, trustee of Mun Lun School and the Lung Doo Society, and a charter member of the Rotary Club of West Honolulu. He also belonged to Wai'alae Country Club and was a Shriner.

Chun is survived by a son, Cedric; and daughter, Carolyn Chun Wong.

A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Waialae Country Club. Donations may be made to Hanahau'oli School.
