Longboard series kicks off at Waikiki

The Hawaiian Longboard Federation's 2003 Steinlager Series will feature five contests, beginning with the Hawaiian South Shore Open at Queen's, Waikiki Beach, May 3 and 4.

Each contest will feature separate divisions for professionals and amateurs. All boards used in the series must be around nine feet long with a rounded nose.

The amateur divisions will be separated by age groups, ranging from 14 and younger to 60 and older. The professional division will offer $2,000 in prize money for each contest.

Former world champions Rusty Keaulana and Bonga Perkins are among the competitors expected to enter the pro division.

Entry fees range from $35 to $50 for amateurs and $100 to $125 for pros.

The schedule:

  • May 3-4—Hawaiian South Shore Open at Queen's, Waikiki
  • June 21-22—Kewalos Kup at Kewalo Basin, O'ahu
  • July 19-20—Toes at the Bowls at Ala Moana Bowls, O'ahu
  • Aug. 23-24—Longboard No Ka Oi at Lahaina, Maui
  • Sept. 20-21—Hana Hou Classic at Queen's, Waikiki

Longboard contest on Maui

The 26th Kimo's Jerry Boser Memorial Longboard Contest is in progress, with holding dates now through August.

Surfboards must be 9 to 11 feet long with a single fin and no surf leashes. Judges will score competitors on a combination of nostalgic and progressive moves.

Swim series entries open

Early entries for the 2003 North Shore Swim Series are being accepted.

The series will consist of four events on the North Shore of O'ahu: Raging Isle Sprint (1 mile from Sunset Beach to Pipeline) on June 28; Surf & Sea Cup (1 mile around Hale'iwa Beach Park) on July 12; Cholos 2000 Swim (2,000 meters around Waimea Bay) on July 26; Surf & Sea North Shore Challenge (2.3 miles from Pipeline to Waimea Bay) on Aug. 9.

Entry fee is $25 per event, or $80 for all four. The early entry deadline is June 6.

Polo returning to North Shore

After a 10-year absence, the Hawai'i Polo Club will play polo at the Mokule'ia Polo Field.

The season opener is Sunday, followed by 10 consecutive Sunday games. Gates open at 11 a.m. for tailgating. Games begin at 2 p.m.

Admission is $5 per person for tailgate parking. Season membership, including the 10 games and guest passes, is available. Contact Murph Dailey at 637-4692.
