Kapolei eager to showcase city for Sunset events

The city's "Sunset on the Beach" heads to the Kapolei Fairgrounds this weekend, the latest venue for the popular outdoor food, entertainment and movie festivals.

In keeping with the festivals' new regional format, "Sunset on the Plains" as this one is called, embraces the communities of 'Ewa Beach, 'Ewa, Kapolei and Ko Olina.

The two-day event will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with continuous live entertainment, craft booths, a marketplace and activities for children, including a skateboard ramp.
The movies will start at about 7:30 p.m. each day. The festival will run until 10 p.m. both days.
Themed "Proud to be an American," Saturday will feature patriotic music and entertainment. On Sunday the Honolulu Symphony will perform Hawaiian music, ending its performance with fireworks at sunset.
"The main objective of 'Sunset on the Beach' is economic development, and this gives the city of Kapolei the opportunity to showcase our city and our people," said Maeda Timson, committee finance chairwoman and longtime Kapolei resident. "I think we're the best city on the island, and this is certainly going to prove it."
Saturday's movie will be the Hawai'i-based surf flick "Blue Crush"; Sunday will feature the blockbuster hit "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers."
Entertainment also will include the James Campbell High School Polynesian Group, Ilima Intermediate School, 'Aiea High School Samoan Club, Manutahi Tahitian Dance Group, Men of W.A.R., Nuuanu Brothers Band and the Celtic Pipes and Drums.
The city and county of Honolulu and St. Francis Medical Center-West are event co-sponsors. The Honolulu Advertiser, which plans a new $82 million printing facility in Kapolei, is a platinum sponsor.
The Kapolei Fairgrounds is at Farrington Highway and Fort Barrette Road.
