CENTRAL O'AHU

Motorcyclists hurt in hit-run

Two motorcyclists were seriously injured after being hit by a Nissan pickup truck on Kaonohi Street in Pearlridge at about 1:18 p.m. yesterday.

The truck's driver, 44, fled but witnesses pointed him out and he was arrested.

Police said the truck was headed north on Kaonohi Street and turned left into the Kam Drive-In driveway and into the path of the two motorcycles. The truck driver was not injured. Speed and alcohol were not factors.

The motorcyclists, ages 24 and 32, were taken to Tripler Army Medical Center.

HONOLULU

Fire damage set at $250,000

An estimated $250,000 damage was caused to a two-story house at 1901 Pacific Heights Road that was gutted by fire Saturday night, according to Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Kenison Tejada.

The cause was unknown, but investigators suspect a front bedroom was where the blaze started. Two families totaling nine people lived in the house. No one was injured.

Tejada also said a fire at a community hale on the Hoa 'Aina O Makaha farm next to Makaha Elementary School Saturday caused an estimated $20,000 damage.

Falling plaster poses danger

Ala Moana Center security closed off a section of the mall-level sidewalk between Macy's and Shirokiya at about 3 p.m. yesterday after a foot-long chunk of three-quarter-inch-thick plaster fell about 50 feet from Macy's roof and shattered near pedestrians below.

No one was hurt, but shopper Charlie Cain said the plaster nearly hit him as he walked near Starbucks. "It just missed smacking me," Cain said. "I can't imagine what would have happened if it hit a kid. You don't think to look up when you are walking around a shopping center."

A crew will be sent to inspect the roof today, said Macy's maintenance worker Danny Wong.

NEIGHBOR ISLAND

Three injured after carriage flips

A horse-drawn carriage taking tourists through the Big Island's Waipi'o Valley flipped over Saturday, slightly injuring three of the nine passengers.

Four horses were pulling the wagon through the picturesque valley on the Big Island's North Shore when something spooked them around 10:30 a.m. The horses tipped over the wagon, spilling passengers and the driver onto Waipi'o Valley Road, north of Hi'ilawe River, said Capt. Mike Matsui of the Honoka'a fire station.
