Record run qualifies UH freshman for regional

University of Hawai'i freshman Hanna Bremler became the fourth Rainbow Wahine to qualify for the NCAA Track and Field Regional Championships, and set a school record in the 1500-meter run in the process, with a 4:29.98 at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational Saturday night.

Bremler's time broke the record of 4:30.83 set by Casey McGuire-Turcotte in 2002.

Olivia Smoody (high jump), Novelle Murray (discus), and Victoria Chang (3000) have also qualified for the NCAA Regional championship, which will be held May 30-31 at Stanford, Calif.


BASEBALL

• Baldwin forces playoff: Baldwin beat Maui High, 13-3, Saturday night in Maui Interscholastic League baseball, handing the Bears their first loss of the season and forcing a regular-season playoff game tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Iron Maehara Field.

Both teams are 13-1.

Jered Mochizuki went 4 for 5 with a double and Mead Tabata was 4 for 4 with four RBIs to lead the Bears. Vance Otake was 2 for 3 and drove in all three Saber runs.


GOLF

• Murashige, Bonk, Kim lead in BIIF: The Big Island Interscholastic Federation individual championship golf tournament got under way Saturday at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

Hilo's Kira-Ann Murashige shot a 1-over 73 for a one-shot lead over Waiakea's Amanda Wilson in the girls' competition heading into the second round, which will be played at the Mauna Lani North Course on Wednesday. The final round will be played Saturday at Hualalai.

Burt Bonk (Hawai'i Prep) and David Kim (Waiakea) are tied for the boys' lead at 72 after the first round.


WATER POLO

• Rainbows seventh in MPSF tourney: Chelsea Garner-Prohs and Beth Novick scored two goals each to lead the University of Hawai'i women's water polo team to a 7-4 victory over UC Santa Barbara on the final day of the MPSF tournament in Stanford, Calif.

Hawai'i finished seventh in the tournament.

Stanford edged UCLA, 3-2, in the fifth sudden-death overtime period to claim the championship.
